In 2009, a water privatisation deal priced poorer households out of their own water supply. Girls were bullied at school for being dirty. The company behind it had a good website, a stated mission, published values and a page about corporate responsibility.
Better Than Your Behaviour starts with that gap — the distance between what people say they stand for and what they do when power, incentives and pressure intervene. We run on inner code we rarely examine, let alone upgrade. The book is about changing it.
The book examines why stated values so often fail under pressure, how character becomes visible through behaviour and how we can become more deliberate about the inner code we live by.
Behaviour is data. It isn't destiny.

Better Than Your Behaviour was inspired by something my Mum used to say to me.
“When I criticise you, it’s not you I criticise but your behaviour because you’re better than your behaviour.”
Over the years, this has come to help me distinguish between people and our behaviours, and humanity and our potential. For me, this is the ultimate nudge - nudging us from our current behaviours to the better, more humane aspect of being human. And this must happen now – for without it, we will fail to tackle our joint global challenges from climate change to the impact of technology.
